SYNOPSIS

[EN] A history of science professor gives a lecture on an 18th-century figure: the English ambassador to Naples William Hamilton, collector and amateur scholar of Vesuvius. His story serves as a device for some young students to traverse the Vesuvian landscape while telling the story of a woman, Hamilton's second wife: Emma Hart, a dancer who competed with the volcano for her husband's amorous attentions. In the finale, Emma appears in flesh and blood, like a ghost dancing a volcanic choreography. The work took shape through a school workshop in which students were active in the creative process and then also became performers in the film. The film draws inspiration from a history of science essay by English scholar Noam Andrews titled *Volcanic Rhythms: Sir William Hamilton's Love Affair with Vesuvius*. The intent is to explore the Vesuvian landscape in various forms, starting from its geological history, moving through the visual power of its landscape, and arriving at a possible expression of its magnificence through the language of dance.
