BIOGRAPHIE

Jannis Lenz studied Directing at the at University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he also worked as an assistant for the directing classes of Wolfgang Murnberger and Michael Haneke. He collected his first camera and directing experiences by filming himself and his friends doing “Le Parkour”, a performing art in urban environment. Grown up in Germany in a family with his palestinian grandmother and a sister who came from Cambodia as a refugee during civil war, questions regarding identity and affiliation were ever since central issues in his life and so in his work. Lenz's films have been screened in museums and at international festivals like Rotterdam, Sarajevo, Sheffield Doc, Palm Springs, Montreal, Talinn or Tampere and have won numerous awards and prizes. His Bachelor- Degree Film at the Filmacademy Vienna, the Crossmedia- Project WANNABE, won the EFA Award at Clermont-Ferrand and got nominated for the European Film Awards 2017. During his studies at the Filmacademy Vienna, Lenz learned from lecturers like Abbas Kiarostami, Andreas Dresen and Jessica Hausner, among others. He attended the Max- Reinhardt Seminar Vienna as a guest- student for theatre- directing and acting, received the START – Scholarship for Cinematic Art by the Austrian Ministry of Culture and is an official member of the European Film Academy. Currently Lenz is editing his first feature film „Soldaten weinen nicht“, dramaturgically accompanied by Tizza Covi. The early work-in-progress Version of the film won the IDM Final Touch Award 2019.
