Kalika relied on the power of fiction from a young age to help her deal with many difficulties, from growing up in poverty to dealing with racism and her mother's tyrannical behaviour. Books were her constant companions. However, while Kalika was in prison she lost the ability to read fiction and she had to find a new way forward.
