SYNOPSIS

Kai, a whirlwind of energy with a mischievous grin, isn’t your average nine-year-old. Beneath his love of video games and pranks lies a quiet confidence - a knowing of himself that transcends his age. At nine, Kai came out as transgender. Life of Kai follows him over a decade, not as a medical exposé but as a deeply human story. It bypasses the details of blockers, hormones, and surgery, focusing instead on humour, resilience, and the everyday milestones of growing up. Kai’s dreams shift - breakdancer, model, tattoo artist - but his core truth remains the same: the desire to live happily, comfortable in his own skin, and loved for who he is. As Kai grows, the film situates his personal journey within a changing landscape of trans rights: moments of progress alongside hostility and loss, including the murder of Brianna Ghey. Through it all, Kai’s story becomes a beacon of hope - a testament to self-acceptance and the strength to navigate even the most difficult paths. At its heart, Life of Kai is about identity, joy, and the universal human spirit of becoming.
