SYNOPSIS

In the Bay of Marseille, marine life navigates a sea marked by the growing imprint of human activity—pipelines, fishing nets, internet cables, and other visible and imperceptible traces of human presence. Eschewing narration and filmed entirely underwater with natural light and ambient sound, MARE NOSTRUM explores how human interventions shape the sea and how the sea, in turn, absorbs or resists these changes. The film offers a hypnotic immersion into the tension, uncertainty, and adaptation playing out below the surface, dislocating the human gaze and situating it in a turbulent zone where orientation is fluid and the sea itself dictates the terms of vision and sound.
