SYNOPSIS

"An Anamnestic Analogy" is a personal documentary about memory and migration. Our family recently made the startling discovery that 70 years ago, my grandmother had fled an arranged marriage in Northeast China to come to Guangzhou—something she never mentioned to any of us while she was alive. Through an old photograph, I trace her journey of escape: the 70-yuan bride price, an 11-day train ride, and a 3,738-kilometer travel. In the stories of her younger sister and the memories of my grandfather, I find myself meeting her gaze across time—the determined eyes of the young woman she once was.
