William, a young Irish midshipman has fallen in love with Elizabeth, the daughter of his Commanding Officer, Admiral Parker. Still, she is secretly engaged with Johnson, another midshipman whose family has fallen in disgrace. Before William leaves to fight a war against the Argentinean Confederation, Elizabeth, and William share one last meeting where William promises her that he will find a way to convince her father to change his mind. Some weeks later, William Brown has been captured and with it, the possibility of a quick end to the conflict is in sight. To gain more reputation, William has been appointed as Brown´s jailor. Though they are both Irish, William despises Brown because, in his eyes, Brown has betrayed England. This hatred continues until Brown saves William from being harshly punished when he falls asleep during his guard. This event leads William to be friendlier with Brown and confide with Brown about his romantic issues as time goes by. At the same time, in the bedroom of Admiral Parker, Johnson, the midshipman who captured Brown has a secret meeting where he confides his fears that William might betray them and free Brown. Therefore, Admiral Parker lets Johnson replace William. When Johnson replaces William, he confides in the sleeping admiral that he knows his rival is innocent but plans to kill him by executing the prisoner and then framing his rival, that way no one will stop him from marrying Elizabeth. To his misfortune, Brown wakes up and asks William for help, who comes just in time to save him. Without options, William helps Brown to escape though not knowing that the Admiral later knocks him off and leaves him on the boat. Once Parker finds William, he acknowledges his failure and uses Johnson as his scapegoat.
