In the midst of global economic overexploitation and computer-aided manufacturing, debarked tree trunks still have to be turned into wood materials for coffins. Within this linear work of constant mass production, the film longs for a moment of rest, while man is constantly burying himself in the remains of a material world. Portraying the last of a kind coffin factory in Germany, "Restbestand" emphasizes something existentially persistent and cyclical at the same time. Statement: In view of today's technologies, the film, in hybrid form, contrasts the physical work of a Berlin coffin factory with its overwhelming production stock. At first glance, "Restbestand" documents work steps and material. But a closer look at the relationship between worker and coffin opens up a deep contemplation within economic structures, working conditions and automated processes in which humanity is increasingly abolishing itself. In this sphere, however, the coffin is only a demand to be capitalized on, sober and far removed from burial and mourning. A reusable transport case that serves as a hygienic vehicle to be decomposed again. Through an animistic style, the elephant in the room is pointed out - a taboo that is disturbing, something dysfunctional, something that cannot be processed. Perhaps something so incomprehensible that it is better for humans to lock it away in a coffin.
