In August 2023, Elsa Pennacchio and Etienne de Villars begin a residency at the Image et mouvement studio of the SAS of the Baumettes prison. They creative writing project allows them to engage inmates enrolled in a cinema and audiovisual arts training, introducing them to silver film. The artists bring a setting with them: a building mockup and a window with a courtyard view. Together with the inmates, they imagine and write stories stemming from the inner voices that inhabit this imaginary place. The window thus becomes a screen to unveil these voices, anonymously, with Chinese shadows. The film evokes cohabitation and solitude within the same building in an oniric way. The choice of a room and a story to tell allows for the expression of singular identities. While certain inmates allude to the prison in their texts, others choose to evoke their neighborhood or their country of origin. The crashing and banging of a zealous handyman binds the windows of the building together, ultimately damaging its structure.
