Drum Calls presents rhythms of Africa and her Diaspora as a circle of connection between past, present and future. Dance connects us to ancestral knowledge through embodied codes, while the practice of improvisation in circle connects the future, because it creates constant innovation. This narrative movie presents Afro-diasporic dances as intangible, living heritage – with a unique epistemology that synchronises image, sound, body and spoken language. The film features Malinke, Akan and Black American rhythm codes including Sanja, Numudon, Koroduga, Abodan and Ring Shout. It interprets the history of the transatlantic slave trade as one of cultural resilience and continuity through rhythm and creative community in the face of violence and oppression. The story is told through poetry and dance, with creative use of camera angles, movement and lighting. The film is part of Deirdre Molloy’s Arts Practice PhD thesis portfolio and is co-produced with Gerador, Portugal.
