SYNOPSIS

Swabians is an animated documentary short film about the people from the cultural region of South Central Germany. The film is meant to be a cultural exploration, purely anecdotal and artistic in nature. The delivery is an intentionally nuanced and definitely subjective definition of Swabians, a highly stereotyped ethnocultural people of Germany. Besides exploring the local idiosyncrasies, we get to see Swabians through the perspective of two native Swabians and two adoptive Swabians: a Syrian and a North Rhine Westphalian. The film is delivered in a mix of English, German and some Swabian dialect. Visually, I worked on a concept to execute the film as an animation, given its inspiring artistic possibilities. The film FLEE is a touching example of the approach I have in mind. Animation provides a sensible way to illustrate the Swabian story, without compromising on emotional qualities. Especially, since Swabians frequently convey a strong aversion to appear in front of the camera. Swabians is a film about identity, belonging, and the remarkable adaptability of the human spirit.
