SYNOPSIS

In the ex-voto sailors' chapel in the cathedral of Saint-Louis de La Rochelle hangs a painting that commemorates the tragedy of Le Saphir from 1741. The slave schooner, becalmed for days and days in the doldrums, was carrying 271 slaves.
