Vadim Mochalov began his studying at Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts alongside the world's new most harrowing historical events: his first year in 2020 was interrupted by the COVID-19 epidemic, and on his third year in 2022 russia's full-scale war against Ukraine began. These events affected his student life, mostly spent at home on online classes. Nevertheless, such conditions helped Vadim to form his own artistic vision by watching many independent films and working on his own projects. During his study years in 2019-2022, Vadim created ten short films, including an adaptation of Lina Kostenko's poem "Don't You Lay the Hand Over My Shoulder", a social problem documentary about the LGBT+ community in Ukraine "Hands," and others. In 2023, he filmed his graduate work “The Return” about the life of a queer boy with religious trauma amid a full-scale war in Ukraine. Vadim successfully defended this short feature film at the university and acquired his bachelor's degree.
