Sonia LEIMER (1977, Italy), lives and works in Vienna. Her films, sculptures and installations move between the real and the imaginary, exploring the ways in which architecture, urban environments, and material objects reveal and embody historical and societal changes She studied architecture at the Technical University of Vienna and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (2001 – 2004) and founded the architecture office and gallery Nullmaschine (2001–2002). Her monthly radio broadcast “Image and the City” was on Radio Orange (2005 to 2012). From 2012 to 2016, she taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and from 2017 to 2018, she taught “Installation and Architecture” at the ETH Zürich. Her work has been exhibited internationally at Venice Architecture Biennale; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; ISCP, New York; Kunsthaus Zürich; Artothek, Cologne; Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles; Barbara Gross Galerie, Munich; Basis, Frankfurt; BAWAG Contemporary, Vienna; Galerie nächst St. Stephan, Vienna; Leopold Museum, Vienna; LAMOA Los Angeles Museum of Art; Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen; MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles; Manifesta 7, Rovereto; Mumok – Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Vienna; Museion, Bolzano/Bozen, Italy; Museum der Moderne, Salzburg; Salzburger Kunstverein; the Moscow Biennale; the Fellbach Triennale; and the Vladivostok Biennale for Visual Arts among others. Sonia Leimer was a winner of the 4th edition of the Italian Council Award, a MAK Schindler grant, the Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky Prize, the Paul Flora Prize, and the Audi Art Award. Her works can be found in museums and private collections such as Belvedere, Vienna, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Lentos Museum, Linz, Wien Museum, Vienna, Gaby and Wilhelm Schürmann Collection, Herzogenrath among others.
